Loss of the Fat Mass in Space – Weightlessness/Microgravit

In weightlessness (microgravity), the human body is affected with involuntary loss of the muscle, bone and fat mass.

Note;

  1. Body has weight because of the pull of gravity.
  2. In weightlessness, the body doesn’t have weight.
  3. No one can lose weight in weightlessness. (You can’t lose something that you don’t have.)
  4. In weightlessness, the human body, like any physical object, has mass. In an environment of 1G and in weightlessness, the body has mass.

For the time being in weightlessness/microgravity, increased food intakes will not even slow the loss of the muscles, bones and fat mass.

There is no supplement, drugs or any kind of food that will even slow in weightlessness the atrophy of the muscles bones and fat mass.

It is obvious that even a Bear will not gain body mass in weightlessness, despite excessive feeding, nor it will be saved from atrophy of the existing body mass.

The involuntary loss of the muscles, bones and fat mass is one major obstacle for any possible prolonged space travel.

The only way to slow the ATROPHY of the muscles, bones and FAT MASS is to do exercises on a specially designed exercises device for weightlessness.

The example of how the weightlessness affect the body mass regulation, shows us that without the pull of gravity it will be not only impossible to gain body mass whether it is muscles mass, bones mass or FAT MASS, it would also be impossible to maintain the existing body weight whether you are human or a bear.

The biological basis of fat mass formation and the mechanisms of body fat distribution can be understood by almost everyone, but it takes time to explain.

That article doesn’t explain everything, but it is the first step to understand the biological basis of fat mass formation. (Actually it should be the talk of fat cells formation and fat mass formation but for the sake of simplicity, I  mentioned only fat mass formation because formation of the fat cells causes an increase of the fat mass and an increase of the size of single cell increases body fat mass.

There is only one biological basis of fat mass formation.

There are many mechanisms underlining body fat mass distributions.

The big obstacle to combat obesity is the fact that nearly “everyone thinks they know” why people getting obese and nearly “everyone thinks they know” what people should do in order to lose excessive body weight.

Weight loss treatment involving dieting, increased physical activity, diet pills and bariatric surgeries was invented when obesity scientists believed that every single calories in food intake if not spent will be stored. Those believe was in line with the anabolism and catabolism theories - (flawed theories). At those times, the theory “calories in – calories out" was unquestioned scientific dogma.
A few years back, it was realized that a significant amount of food intake lives in the body as metabolic waste (faeces, urine, sweat, breathe etc.). (Significant and variable amount of the energy in food intake human body doesn’t use but excretes mainly through the digestive and urinary system.)There was a little confusion among people involved in research, prevention and treatments of obesity, but another theory was quickly invented. It was a “calories in – calories out over a prolonged period of time”. This theory is widely known as “the energy balance”.

In 2007 I havedebunked the “energy balance paradigm”.

Since early 2010, “The Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO)”, theUnited Kingdoms foremost organisation dedicated to the understanding and treatment of obesity, has removed from their website everything that mentioned calories in – calories out and the energy balance. Up to date of 30 March 2011 on “The web site of the Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO)” there is noting about calories or “energy balance”. The ASO used to run the ORIC, the Obesity Resource and Information Centre. The ORIC disappeared from the internet in the early of 2010.

The UK Government's Foresight Report 'Tackling Obesities: Future Choices', in 2007, 2008 and 2009 involving around 100 obesity scientists, was based on the “Energy Balance Paradigm”. It appears that all Foresight UK work related to the problem of obesity was not only fruitless, but it was also misleading.
It seems that since early 2010, Foresight UK doesn’t do any work on the obesity problem.

It appears that the “calories in – calories out” and the “energy balance paradigm” as a basis of understanding obesity have been abandoned by UK obesity researchers.
